Dear [name of school] School Council,
I am writing to you today to flag $1 billion in education cuts that were announced on March 24th by the Ford government. Education workers are pushing the Ford government to renew and increase Covid-related funding for Ontario students in the 2021-22 school year. We know that significant supports will be needed to help our students recover from this crisis. I am reaching out in the hopes that we can work together to prevent these education cuts and win much needed investment in our school communities.
We are just starting the third wave of the pandemic and our schools need more support in September, not less.
If the cuts are not reversed, schools will have to lay off thousands of custodians, EAs, teachers, child and youth workers and other education workers who have supported our schools and children during this crisis.
The mental health impacts of covid won’t magically disappear in September.
There is still no vaccine for children, so returning to regular class sizes won’t work.
The school maintenance issues existed before COVID and have been exacerbated by the pandemic.
Regardless of the incredible efforts of education workers, we know that our students will need more support to recover from the effects of learning during a pandemic.
In the interest of growing supports for our school communities, I ask that you encourage all staff and parents/guardians to send and share the MPP letter on SupportOurSchools.ca. By working together and raising up our voices, we can win the supports that Ontario students need and deserve. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with feedback and/or to discuss the issues and opportunities for collaboration.
